Throughout this month, we observe various events that highlight the importance and benefits of breastfeeding. These include World Breastfeeding Week, Indigenous Milk Medicine Week, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week, and Black Breastfeeding Week. These annual global campaigns are dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding. It is a crucial initiative following a concerning increase in infant mortality rates due to a decline in breastfeeding rates. While ultimately the decision is personal, did you know the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding until a child reaches two years of age? Let's come together this World Breastfeeding Week to support and promote breastfeeding for the well-being of our children.

World Elder Abuse Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – June 15th
At Northern Pharmacy & Medical Equipment, we stand with our community in recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15th. This global observance is a vital reminder to remain vigilant in protecting the dignity, safety, and well-being of older adults.
Elder abuse can take many forms—including physical, emotional, financial, or neglect—and often goes unreported. As a trusted healthcare provider, we are committed to helping families recognize the signs and offer resources to support vulnerable seniors.
What You Can Do:
Stay connected with elderly loved ones—regular check-ins can go a long way.
Report concerns—if you suspect abuse, contact Adult Protective Services or local authorities.
Educate yourself and others about the signs of abuse and neglect.
Advocate for policies that protect elder rights and ensure access to quality care.
Together, we can build a safer, more respectful world for all generations. To report elder abuse in Maryland, you can dial 2-1-1 for the Maryland 211 service, which will connect you with resources and support.

Flag Day
Flag Day – Honoring the American Spirit
Observed annually on June 14th, Flag Day celebrates the adoption of the United States flag in 1777. This patriotic occasion reminds us of the enduring values our flag represents: freedom, unity, resilience, and hope.
A Brief History: Flag Day commemorates the day the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution on June 14, 1777, declaring that the flag of the United States be made of 13 stripes, alternating red and white, and 13 white stars on a blue field, representing the original colonies.
Though not a federal holiday, Flag Day holds deep meaning, especially in communities across the country that host parades, ceremonies, and educational events to honor the red, white, and blue.
Why It Matters to Us: At Northern Pharmacy & Medical Equipment, we proudly recognize Flag Day as a moment to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy—and to honor the individuals and families we serve every day, especially our veterans, seniors, and caregivers.
Did you happen to know?
President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day in 1916.
Pennsylvania is the only state to observe Flag Day as a state holiday.
The American flag has been modified 27 times since its original adoption to reflect the growth of the nation.

May is National Employee Health & Fitness Month!
Established in 1989 by the National Association for Health and Fitness (NAHF), this month is dedicated to promoting wellness programs in the workplace. As we welcome staff back to the office, the importance of employee health and wellness has never been clearer.
Investing in the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of employees not only enhances their health but also boosts productivity, job satisfaction, and company culture.
Here are a few ways to promote wellness in your workplace this month:
Implement Wellness Programs: Encourage regular physical activity and healthy eating.
Mental Health Resources: Provide access to mental health support and stress management workshops.
Create a Supportive Environment: Foster a culture that prioritizes health and well-being.

High Blood Pressure Education Month
Prioritize your health this Blood Pressure Education Month by visiting our Retail Pharmacy to use our free in-house blood pressure machine. High blood pressure, known as the "silent killer," often has no symptoms but can lead to serious health issues like heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems if untreated. Regularly checking your blood pressure is essential. Alongside monitoring, consider lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, limiting alcohol, and reducing sodium intake. Managing stress through yoga, meditation, or time in nature can also help. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables is beneficial, as these foods are low in sodium and high in potassium. If diagnosed with high blood pressure, work with your healthcare provider to create a treatment plan that may include medication, lifestyle adjustments, and regular check-ups. Since high blood pressure often has no noticeable symptoms, it’s vital to get checked regularly, especially if you have risk factors like a family history or a sedentary lifestyle.
Tips for Managing High Blood Pressure:

Wellness Wednesday: Medication Myth
Myth busted: You don’t always need an antibiotic. 💊 Antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections, not viral ones like the common cold or flu. Using antibiotics in excess can lead to antibiotic resistance. 🦠 Always consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider to determine if antibiotics are necessary. 👨⚕️
